My heart was gladdened by the following article, reproduced from the news.com.au website and titled "Earthquake survivors get solar powered Bibles". The post is reproduced below:
AS international aid agencies rush food, water and medicine to Haiti's earthquake victims, a US faith-based group is sending Bibles to Haitians in their hour of need.
Not just any Bible.
These are solar-powered audible Bibles that can broadcast the holy scriptures in Haitian Creole to 300 people at a time.
Called the "Proclaimer," the audio Bible delivers "digital quality" and is designed for "poor and illiterate people", the Faith Comes By Hearing group said.
According to their website, the Proclaimer is "self-powered and can play the Bible in the jungle, desert or ... even on the moon!"
The Albuquerque-based organisation said 600 of the devices were already on their way to Haiti.
It said it was responding to the Haitian crisis by "providing faith, hope and love through God's Word in audio".
With tens of thousands of Port-au-Prince residents living outdoors because their homes have collapsed or they fear aftershocks from last week's quake, the audio Bible can bring them "hope and comfort that comes from knowing God has not forgotten them through this tragedy", the group said.
Indeed, while others may be rushing into Haiti with fleeting gifts of food and water, or building shelters and infrastructure, at least one organization, and I pray many more, are doing the right thing and delivering Bibles, and spiffy electronic solar powered ones at that. WHat good is food, after all...it will only get eaten. This however is truly something worth devouring...food for the soul. In view of Reverend Robertson's proclaimation that Haiti had a pact with the devil, leaving God no option but to flatten the tropical island and kill tens of thousands of people, it seems just that the survivors will get an opportunity to listen the His Word while rummaging through the rubble in search of a realtive to gnaw on. This is Haiti, a land ruled by Satan who is praised and glorified in their 'voodoo' rituals. The last line of the article saays it all really: "With tens of thousands of Port-au-Prince residents living outdoors because their homes have collapsed or they fear aftershocks from last week's quake, the audio Bible can bring them "hope and comfort that comes from knowing God has not forgotten them through this tragedy", the group said.
Of course God has not forgotten them...he brought this catastrophe upon the Haitians. His memroy is pretty good, I'll bet, certainly good enough that He wouldn't forget a people he pulverized and squashed just days before. In His mercy, he will await the praise and thanks from the people of Haiti, who must by now be regtretting that whole deal with Satan thing.
Why then did God spare the Dominican Republic, a country whcih shares the same island with Haiti? Clearly, the Dominican Republicanos or whatever were spared His merciful wrath because they were not in league with Satan, but were devoutly kowtowing and genuflecting and otherwise sloughing off the burdens of free will and rationality. There is alesson in here for all of us, most especially for those who scorn the Lord and his all encompassing Love and Mercy, especially those living on fault lines.
